Self-managed training

Let athletes fully manage their own training and everything related to it

Updated over 3 weeks ago

In this article, we talk about the recommended setup for "Trayn Single" and how changing the configuration will affect other settings. If you only want to let athletes manage their own calendar, please refer to Athlete Calendars.

User setting "self-managed"

The main property to enable is the self-managed flag on the athlete. As administrator, navigate to User Management and select the user. From there, enable the flag in the Settings section.

With this setting enabled, the user can do everything with their own profile that was previously only available to trainers, i.e. build workouts and assign them to their own calendar.

If a user is both trainer and athlete, they can toggle from their user profile whether to use the app as athlete or trainer. As trainer they can prepare and assign workouts, manage performance data etc, while as athlete they can track their own training progress.

Team settings: athletes and trainers

Turning on self-managed for a user makes them a trainer in addition to their athlete role. They can do everything a trainer usually does, and, optionally, the user will be available as a trainer for teams.

Screenshot of team member settings: the user is athlete in one team, trainer in some other team and both athlete and trainer in a third team.

If you add this athlete/trainer as a trainer to a team, they will be able to see and do everything a normal trainer can do, i.e. prepare the training for other athletes.

The idea is to make a few scenarios possible, while, at the same time do not require a user to switch between athlete and trainer accounts. We have seen requests for this in several organizations, e.g. a trainer who is also an athlete on the team, or training groups of individuals with some of them being responsible for the programming.

Trainer education with Trayn

Some organizations use this setup for the trainers participating in their educational programs. For such a setup we recommend the following approach.

  • Set up course participants as athletes with the self-managed flag.

  • Configure the ownership model as "restricted" (please get in touch with the support team for that).

  • For every course, create one team with all participants as athletes.

  • Add at least one of the instructors as trainer to that team.

This way, instructors can use Trayn to communicate with course participants and look at what they are working on. In addition, course participants can focus on their coursework and not see other participants.

Also take a look at the Messaging Settings to open/restrict the way users can communicate within teams or with their peers and trainers.
